This is a Temporary, Full Time vacancy that will close in {x} days at {xx:xx} BST.

Are you passionate about network automation and eager to take ownership of designing and delivering cutting-edge solutions?

Do you thrive in an environment where you can collaborate with expert engineers?

Would you like to shape the future of network automation on a large-scale established service provider network?

This is an 18 Month Fixed Term Contract with possibility of extension.

As ASK4’s Senior Network Automation Engineer you will join our Network Infrastructure team and support with the network automation journey of our core network. You will take over and build on the team’s work to deliver automation across our core network, implementing full automation of the network, taking advantage of modern techniques and open-source tools. This will eventually cover our UK and EU core networks, BGP border, distribution network, and aggregation of client sites.

As we begin to expand from a handful of core PoPs to hundreds across the world, the network devices under management will increase significantly. You will be responsible for designing and implementing automated solutions to an agreed schedule, streamlining network operations, improving efficiency, and reducing human error. We are therefore looking for someone who can use their diverse experience to rapidly design and deploy each phase.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Design and deliver to schedule the automation of ASK4’s core network.
  • Supported by a team of engineers who are experts in our network operations and engineering, automation will become your responsibility.
  • Build automation for our next target functional group, and understand the business requirements and work done so far.
  • Build a roadmap for full automation across the core.
  • Design, develop, and implement the software, tools, processes for the automation stack.
  • Create documentation for the entire automation stack.
  • Translate our baseline configurations for existing devices, or lab examples for devices we are onboarding, and develop them into templates. While a full understanding of every config stanza is unnecessary, you will be able to understand the business requirement driving them and help design the necessary models in our source of truth.
  • Collaborate with the wider team of engineers who fully understand our network and our business.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Significant experience with Netbox or Nautobot, including choosing the best way to model data, and using the API to import initial data and pull data for automation.
  • Experience with multiple automation frameworks such as Ansible, Saltstack, Puppet, and the ability to evaluate tools and choose the most appropriate for each use case.
  • Solid experience developing and understanding network device configurations for at least one networking vendor.
  • Solid knowledge of object-oriented software design in at least one programming language, and at least a working knowledge of Python 3.
  • Building network simulations in containerlab/GNS3/etc.
  • Knowledge of automated network testing tools/frameworks/methodologies.
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail and a results-driven mindset.
  • Knowledge of network management concepts and modelling (REST, RESTCONF, YANG).
  • Strong collaboration skills, and the ability to engage with operations teams and software engineers.
